Though away from the city centre, Banashankari has carved out a niche for itself. Right from roadside markets to high-end supermarkets to well- equipped hospitals, to small clinics, Banashankari is an area that has zealously added to it many amenities over the years.

However, many residents are not ready to beat their trumpet. They honestly feel their locality has a long way to go. In fact, they don’t mind telling you they are overrated at the 7th position the DNA-AZ survey has accorded it.

“It should be at the 17th position. There is no proper traffic management especially in the 2nd Stage. When it comes to parking, in some areas, it is so badly managed that one feels frustrated,” said none other than former minister and Congress leader BK Chandrashekhar.

Incidentally, last year, Banashankari was rated the 3rd best place to live in the city. But few seem to dispute its fall from grace.

“Facilities in the area are not adequate. For example, auditoriums and libraries are hard to find,” said Ramu Kanagal, dance director and teacher at Kanagal Nrithyalaya.

Much more remains to be done, he said.
Even a committee member of the Banashankari Residents’ Welfare Association BSK 3rd Stage said the roads were the main reason for the area to remain backward. “40% to 50% of the roads still have to be developed. Any work that goes on  is inconsistent and sporadic,” said GN Manjunath.

This does not, however, mean residents are unhappy living here. “I have been living in this area for the last 20 years, and I rarely have to move out for daily needs. Once in a while, I go to Jayanagar to buy branded items which are not easily available here,” said home-maker Sheeba Jayachandran, who was disappointed over Banashankari’s fall in the survey rating.

“I see no reason for it to have fallen to the 7th position when almost all amenities are available. In fact, we don’t have any water and electricity problems. The market is close by and so are many hospitals,” said a home-maker Vijaya R.

However, eminent theatre personality, Lakshmi Chandrashekar, said that the area is much better compared to other localities in the city.

“Not only are people friendly, they have managed to retain their culture and identity. Along with it, the place is less congested compared to many other areas,” she said.
