An attempt to protect his classmate from eve-teasers killed 15-year-old MC Manoj, police said on Thursday.

This was revealed after the arrest of two youths, Sharath L, 22, and L Vinay alias Kariya, 18, who allegedly attacked Manoj on Wednesday.

Sharath and Vinay were arrested from Uttarahalli. Police said they were aware of Manoj’s death, and had not returned to their homes on Allamaprabhu Road and South Depot Road, respectively, on Wednesday.

Police said the accused persons had no intention to murder Manoj. They wanted to scare the boy, so that he would not cross their path.

Manoj was coming out of school with his classmate around 3.30 pm when the youths teased her. The boy intervened and asked the men to stop teasing the girl. He also asked them to leave the place.

After this incident, the girl went home, while Manoj headed to play cricket at a nearby ground. The boy, however, was unaware that his intervention had angered the eve-teasers.

Manoj played cricket for an hour as usual, and was returning home when the youths accosted him on Shankarmutt Road in Kempe Gowda Nagar. A brief exchange of words later, they hit him with bare hands, and escaped when local residents rushed to the student’s help. The help, however, came late for Manoj, who had fallen unconscious. He died later.

Manoj was son of MC Channeshwara and Pushpa, residents of RK Mutt Layout.
