Jagadish Shetty is eagerly waiting for Ganesha Chaturthi festival this year. That is when he will be taking the delivery of his brand new car.

This is the first time he has made the effort to time a big purchase with a festival day. “This year Ganesha festival falls on September 11. It is an auspicious day and Ganesha is the Lord of new beginnings. So I thought, why not,” says this designer who works in the city’s Mahindra Satyam company.

He is over the moon for another reason. He will be giving his fiancee a surprise by driving his new Hyundai i10 Sports version to her doorstep. “We’re getting married in October. So this is a great start for things to come,” he says.

Shetty says his friend is also buying a car, again coinciding with an auspicious day. “His son’s naming ceremony is on September 5, another good day. He is timing it with that,” says Shetty.

There’s much activity in the car showrooms across the city with enquiries ahead of the festival season.

“The percentage of sales goes up by about 40-50% every year during this time. We are expecting the same this year, too. The season starts towards the end of August and goes on through September and October till the first week of November,” says LN Ajay Singh, director, sales and marketing, Advaith Hyundai.

Singh says it started with the Varamahalakshmi puja and the maximum car deliveries happen during Ganesha Chaturthi, Dussera and Diwali.

“Most of our customers already know exactly which car model they want. They just wait for this time of year to make the purchase,” said a spokeperson for Pratham Motors, which deals with the Maruti brand of cars. While the Alto and the Wagon R are popular among the middle-aged, who look at the exchange offers, youngsters go in for newer models like Ritz, Alto K10, Swift and Dezire.
