In the backdrop of a move in Russia to label the Bhagawad Gita as ‘extremist literature’, Iskcon held a dharna at Town Hall on Wednesday.

Calling the Gita a scripture that brings mankind together, BJP state president KS Eshwarappa said: “The Gita is our national scripture and also a universal bond that has brought many nations together. Today, parties such as the BSP, Congress and BJP have come together. I am happy that external affairs minister SM Krishna has also defended the scripture.”

Some foreign nationals too joined the dharna. “I was introduced to the Gita in Canada. It has enhanced my knowledge. Just like we study a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree, we also study God and this is an in-depth study of God,” said Syamasundrara Dasa.

Iskcon president Varada Krsna Dasa said: “Religious freedom should be protected in any country. An allegation that the Gita is extremist literature is wrong. We believe in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. We feel that protecting religious sentiments is a must.”
