Hundreds of students from all over the south, who gathered at Paryavaran Mitra’s Southern Regional event, a climate change and sustainability education initiative at Town Hall on Wednesday, were left disappointed when the interaction was cancelled at the last minute.

Even though former president and Paryavaran ambassador, Abdul Kalam was unable to make it, the students presented their work through exhibitions of posters and models showcasing the outcomes of their green actions.

“We need to save the Earth from global warming and preserve environment. On our part, we walk to school and encourage many to cycle, so that it doesn’t add to the pollution,” said Jisna S Jose and Yasmin A from Holy Angels Convent Higher Secondary School, Trivandrum. “We also have a biogas plant in our school, where gas is produced though all the waste,” they said.

Students from Government Middle School, near Kanchipuram, have planted more than 70 trees, including medicinal plants. “We are working towards preserving environment. We took the risk of producing bio-diesel even though it was a great danger,” said Anita P, a teacher of the school.

“We have also told students to cycle to school so that it reduces the air pollution,” she said. The school has three pits for waste management: one for bio-degradable waste, another for non-biodegradable waste and the third for natural compost.

“It is with the full cooperation of the students and staff that we are able to take on these initiatives,” said Anita.

“Climate change will affect every aspect of human life. It takes place slowly and is irreversible. We must do our best to preserve environment,” said Dr MH Ravindranath, professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Paryavaran Mitra is an initiative of the ministry of environment and forests and Centre for Environment Education with support from ArcelorMittal.
