The parents of students studying in the Army Public School PRTC, JC Nagar protested outside the school on Friday, crying foul over the steep increase in admission fee.

According to the parents of the 40-odd students, trouble began in April this year when the school management increased the fee structure from `16,500 for a 1st standard student to `21,000. The school changed its name and management from Parachute Regiment School to Army Public School in 2011 after it got clearance to do so from the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE). Parents cite the change in management as the reason behind the hike.

“The school, in 2009, increased the fee for a student by 110%, for which the parents protested and filed a case in the high court. At that time, the high court had given a verdict stating the fee had to be reduced back to the fee structure before 2009. But no action has been taken by the school. On top of that, the school has hiked the fee structure even further now,” said Vishwaradhya, a resident of RT Nagar whose two children study in 3rd standard and 5th standard.

Giri Kumar, another parent believed that if the school does not bend to the parents’ demands, they will be forced to resort to taking further legal action against the management.
The school management claims that none of the 42 parents who gathered to protest have paid fees for the past one-and-a-half-year.

“We have not paid the newly increased re-admission fee as imposed by the school but we have paid the fee as approved by the high court,” said Shabaz Khan. In August, the school management received a notice from the CBSE that the board had approved the change in management and name of the school only on condition that “the new management would not charge any fresh admission fee from the students on this account.”

Sources at the school, however, claim that they only received the notice after they had collected the fees and have written back to CBSE explaining the situation. The management is currently awaiting a reply from the board. Officials from the school, further claimed that they have spoken to the Karnataka State Commission for Child Rights commission.
