A 30-year-old contract employee of the CET Cell attempted suicide by consuming poison in Vidhana Soudha on Monday.

Mahananda Kumar, a resident of Kadugodi, who had come to complain to the higher education minister RV Deshpande that his salary for the past four months was not dispatched and that he was forced to quit his job, consumed poison in front of the minister’s office on the third floor of the legislature.

On witnessing Mahananda consume poison, passersby and the police rushed him to Bowring Hospital. Deputy commissioner of police (Vidhana Soudha) S Lakshman Singh said Mahananda consumed some herbal chemical and that he was out of danger. The Vidhana Soudha police have registered a case of attempt to suicide against Mahananda.

Meanwhile, Mahananda’s brother Chaya Kumar alleged that his brother was frequently harassed by officials of the CET cell—Chakravathy Mohan, SP Kulkarni and Srinivas. Kumar said his brother was subjected to caste discrimination and was forced to work in the residences of the aforementioned officials.

“My brother was beaten up by Srinivas when he refused to do his house hold chores. A complaint in this regard was filed four months ago at the Malleswaram police station,” said Kumar.

He also said Mahananda was forced to take this extreme step as, despite having complained about the harassment to higher education minister on several occasions in the past, no action was taken against the CET Cell officials, neither were any attempts made to release his salary.

Meanwhile, the administrative officer of the Karnataka Examination Authority, SP Kulakarni, said Mahananda was not an employee of the KEA and that he had no idea why he was being dragged into the issue.

“He was never regular for work. His job was to clean the CET cell premises and he used to never come to work before noon. We never had direct contact with him,” he claimed.
