Citing public interest, the Bangalore Metro rail corporation limited (BMRCL) has rejected the request of a former chief secretary to make 'slight' changes in alignment of Phase 2 of Namma Metro on the approach road to export processing industrial park(EPIP) in Whitefield.

It is said that according to the existing plan, a portion of compound wall of a tech park hosting many companies have to be acquired by the BMRCL. The former chief secretary had instead suggested that it can be avoided by shifting present alignment to the road median in the section between Vydehi hospital and BMTC bus stand.

In its response to the letter of this former IAS officer, the BMRCL has stated that if the alignment is shifted to the median of the road, the property belonging  to the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) would have to be acquired and demolished and that such a move would be against the public interest.

The letter undersigned by Director (projects and planning) of BMRCL BS Sudhir Chandra states that if the alignment was shifted on to the road median and taken to the left side near Vydehi hospital circle, much of BMTC property including the bus stand would have to be acquired and demolished, rendering the public transport infrastructure useless and diminishing the intra-city transport facility for local commuters. Such a move is neither desirable nor acceptable in public interest, BMRCL said.

Incidentally in addition to demolition of BMTC bus stand, additional area of multistoried buildings on the north of Vydehi hospital station would have to be acquired and demolished. Therefore, it is not possible to accommodate the alignment at the center of the road on the road median in the section between Vydehi hospital and BMTC bus stand, Metro authorities said.

Before despatching the letter, the BMRCL had a meeting with parties concerned under the chairmanship of chief secretary SV Ranganath on February 26, 2013. Metro authorities re-examined the suggestion to shift the alignment on to the road median, but found it was not feasible.

As per the phase 2 project extension between Baiyappanahalli and Whitefield, the line starts from south of Bangalore-Chennai Railway line and crosses Kasturinagar Road and Outer Ring road and reaches the Old Madras Road. Then the alignment reaches the Whitefield Road and runs along  the median of Whitefield Road and then on the median of Graphite India Road. The line along the median of road and touches the ITPL and Satya Sai Ashram at Whitefield. The corridor has 14 stations, including Vaidehi Hospital station where some changes were sought.
