The much-debated semester system that was introduced before few years in graduation courses, which had received flak from the student and teacher community here, is on the verge of getting scrapped. A long pending demand from the community members is likely to be heard as the university vice-chancellors and other stakeholders have been asked to submit their views in next ten days.

"This was a long pending demand of the students and teachers associations seeking an alternative to the semester system. We have invited feedbacks from all stakeholders including vice-chancellors, principal unions, student unions, teacher unions, etc before forming a state policy. They are supposed to send us their opinion by February 15 after which we will have 3-4 meetings to analyse reviews of everyone," Himanshu Pandya, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat University said.

"It will be a great decision if we are going back to our roots. We never had a semester system and what the new system has done is given us poor quality students. In the previous system, students used to put in real hard work to study and quality of students after the annual examination was much better than what we get today. Students in the present system do not get time to study as they are busy in submitting assignments rather than focussing on studies. To cope with this system, they mug-up and not understand concepts. Semester system was a big failure, said professor Bimal Solanki, Faculty of Commerce, SMPIC, GLS University.

A principal of a technical college on condition of anonymity said that bureaucrats should stop intervening in academic matters. "The government first introduced the system when everyone opposed the same. They never heard academicians. Students suffer a lot due to these big changes in the education system and it is high time that authorities take a note of it. Semester system is a total time waste. Due to two exams in a year, the entire process of practical exams etc gets repeated. In high school, the objective works as it aims to lessen the load of students and assess them better. However, it does not work in colleges," the principal said.
