Sparsh Chest Disease Centre, which opened this weekend, aims to transform their centre dealing exclusively on pulmonary diseases and sleep disorders, into a leading one. According to the centre, run by seven doctors of Ashrai Associates, pulmonary diseases and sleep disorders are growing problems in
Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Ashrai has seven doctors working under the banner, namely  Dr Tushar Patel, Dr Mukesh Patel, Dr Harjit Dumra, Dr Raj Bhagat, Dr Gopal Raval, Dr Amrish Patel and Dr Varun Patel. "We intend to become the leading centre in the country for lung transplant surgeries which is increasingly becoming a concern in our state," said Dr Tushar.

According to a paper presented by these doctors at a conference in USA, mesothelioma is as frequent in metro city patients as in northern Gujarat (12/40) where the prevalence is 30% and in southern Rajasthan (19/58) where the prevalence is 32.75%. However, its prevalence is very low (3/32) is 9.4% in other parts of the state, the doctors said.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, most commonly found in the pleura (outer) lining of lungs and internal chest wall.

"In Ahmedabad, 30% of patients were found suffering from mesothelioma, in northern Gujarat and Rajasthan border, 32.75% patients were found suffering from it and in other parts of the state, the prevalence was 9.4%. At Sparsh, we would treat patients with these problems for which, till now, they had to travel outside the state," explained Dr Harjit. Dr Tushar added, "Within the next one year, they will also practice balloon thermoplasty especially for asthma patients.

This will help in controlling their asthmatic attacks." Sparsh will also set up sleep diagnostic centre where patients' sleep disorders will be video recorded and necessary help will be provided.
