No fear of water shortage: Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani

In order to prevent significant losses as a result of scanty rainfall this season, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani made several announcements for 44 tehsils in the state, which has received less than 125 mm of rainfall so far.

The called an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss his concerns regarding scanty rainfall in the state. The long period of a dry spell this season has led to anxiety in the BJP-led state government.

Deputy CM Nitin Patel, senior ministers Kaushik Patel, Saurabh Patel, RC Faldu, Kunvarji Bavaliya and others have attended the meeting. Officials including chief secretary Dr. JN Singh were present too.

After the meeting, Dy Chief Minister Nitin Patel addressed media persons and said that the Chief Minister assured that there would not be any water crisis in the state.

"There is no need to worry about the availability of water for drinking purpose as there is sufficient water collected in different reservoirs. The CM has also directed the officials to ensure adequate water supply in cities and villages."

"The CM has asked the officials of Narmada and irrigation department to fill Tappar Dam of Kutch by 500 million cubic feet water immediately so that the region gets sufficient water for drinking," Patel said.

There are 44 tehsils in Gujarat, which received less than 125 mm rainfall that includes four tehsils of Ahmedabad district, eight tehsils of Banaskantha district, ten tehsils of Kutch district, six tehsils of Patan and Surendranagar districts each, three from Mehsana, two from Jamnagar and Morbi while one tehsil from Devbhoomi Dwarka, Gandhinagar and Bhavnagar each.

The government has already taken the decision to make fodder available to cattle owners in these 44 tehsils at Rs 2 per Kg until the rainfall crosses the mark of 125mm of the season or further announcement is made.

Sources in the government said, "The state government is also prepared for artificial rain if needed. We still hope that rains will occur in August."

POWER TO FARMERS

State announced on Tuesday that farmers will get electricity for ten hours a day in place of eight. Agricultural power consumption is 6.8 crore units, which would go up to 8 crore units because of extended hours of supply. Energy Minister Saurabh Patel said the decision would lead to the additional monthly burden of Rs 200-250 crore. “The decision will benefit 15 lakh farmers across state.”
