With the issue of water scarcity becoming critical in the city and the civic authority urging people to stop wastage of water, a councilor’s 18-km cycle ride with a placard bearing the message ‘Save Water’ is opportune.

Bipin Patel, a councillor from Asarva, on Thursday came to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on a cycle for the 25th time. He took a pledge to ride a cycle once in a month, to do his bit for the environment and to raise awareness against traffic and pollution. This time, the message was ‘Save Water’.

“As many as 24 times, I rode a cycle with the aim to raise awareness about environmental issues. It also helps traffic congestion. It is not possible to do this every day for me but  I can do it once a month, as I pledged,” said Bipin Patel.

“This time, alongside the two main messages, I had displayed several placards on the cycle and one of them was related to saving water,” added Patel. Asarva faces a lot of water issues, he added. Most of the area is dotted by slums, and hutments do not have water supply.

“I see people hunt for water every day. They are struggling daily, and with the summer sweason on the horizon, the situation will be tougher. It’s better to save water,” he said.

“There are many ways to save water. Instead of washing vehicles with a pipe, we can use a bucket. A leaking tap on an average leads to one litre of water being wasted in three hours. Over a month, that adds up  to 1,000 litres. It would be prudent if we repair such taps,” Patel said.
