Within 12 hours of launching free internet connectivity in Ahmedabad on Monday, 800GB data was consumed. The project called Janmitra Wi-Fi was launched at more than 150 locations, and on the first day it recorded 7,890 users. As part of the project, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is offering free unlimited internet access to the citizens, unlike similar projects in other cities which have data usage limits.
The service started at 6 am on Monday. "For the initial period, we are going to give 2Mbps speed to all, even to those without Janmitra Cards (a prepaid card by AMC which works like a debit card for the payment of civic body's services). A user has consumed 32GB of data in seven hours, which was a very unusual thing," said Mukesh Kumar, Municipal Commissioner. The civic body recorded 35,000 sessions on the first day. At present, the Wi-Fi service is available at 145 BRTS bus stands, AMC-run hospitals, colleges and zonal offices.
