Amid mounting global pressure to act against the perpetrators of the Pulwama attack, Pakistan has begun erasing the digital footprint with the help of Chinese cyber experts, intelligence sources have told DNA.

The efforts, called 'digital mop of signatures' in cybersecurity lingo, is aimed at getting rid of crucial evidence so that Islamabad can weaken New Delhi's argument that the February 14 attack was designed and executed by Pakistan-based Jaishe-e-Mohammad.

"Pakistan is making all attempts with the help of friendly country [China] to remove digital signatures linked with the attack so that India cannot produce any concrete evidence against it," said a source in the Intelligence Bureau, calling it really worrisome.

Any digital activity – a phone call, net browsing, photos, or an email – leave behind some traces, or a digital signature, even after they are deleted. While these trails may not be easy for a common man to trace, experts can track them down or delete them.

India has said that it has "incontrovertible evidence" of Pakistan's involvement in the suicide attack that left 40 CRPF personnel dead. Time and again, India has exposed the role of the terror elements supported by the Pakistani Army and its spy agency ISI in attacks in India.

But Pakistan has been denying any role in the Pulwama carnage, with its Prime Minister Imran Khan claiming: "Pakistan will take action on priority if there's actionable intelligence." Sources said Pakistan has started permanently deleting any digital data that can establish links between JeM operatives in Kashmir and their handlers in Pakistani Army or ISI.

Ever since the attack, India has been working diplomatic lines for isolation of Pakistan and to get JeM Masood Azhar listed by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a global terrorist. Meanwhile, a proposal in this regard has been submitted by the US, UK and France to the Council. These efforts by India has left Pakistan worried, said sources.

"Once the digital signatures are removed, Pakistan will try to claim that India has no evidence against Azhar that proves that he was is a terrorist," said a source.

Apart from cross-platform messaging and apps like WhatsApp Messenger, Telegram or Signal, JeM has developed its own mobile chatting application, an open source and end-to-end encrypted programme having a local server, said sources. This makes it difficult for Indian intelligence agencies the decode encrypted messages among JeM members.
