A drunken man reportedly kept on drinking beer even after crashing his car, since he had "nothing better to do" while waiting for the police.

Palmerston North resident Paul Nigel Sneddon was high with alcohol content nearly three times above the permissible limit.

When asked about how much he had boozed, Paul said: "Plenty. I've been drinking for four days straight," reports Stuff.co.nz.

"When you're lonely like I am, you cling to the things that bring you comfort," he added.

Paul told The Dominion Post that it was the lowest point of his life, but it would not stop him drinking.

He had a breath-alcohol limit of 1191mcg. The legal limit is 400mcg.

Paul was fined $1100 and disqualified from driving for 10 months by judge Gregory Ross.
