Pakistani authorities on Wednesday tightened security for Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the founding ameer of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and chief of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), after he was recently threatened by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to home department sources in Punjab, more police personnel have been deputed to Saeed’s Johar town residence and the Jamia Qadsia offices after an intelligence report that the Taliban led by Commander Hakeemullah Mehsud planned his assassination.

The sources said Saeed invited the Waziristan-based Taliban’s wrath after he condemned suicide bombings that claimed civilians’ lives.

The sources said the Punjab home department had directed the authorities to beef up security for the JuD chief, whose vehicle was chased by armed men last week, while he was on his way home.

A JuD spokesman confirmed that security had been beefed up but added that Saeed had nothing against the Taliban and neither did they have anything against him.

The Pakistani authorities had received three dossiers from India during foreign secretary-level talks on February 25, pertaining to the alleged involvement of Saeed in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, but refused to hand him over to India, claiming that the dossiers did not contain actionable intelligence.

In October 2009, the Lahore high court had quashed terror charges against Saeed and set him free due to lack of evidence.
The court had also stated that the JuD was not a banned organisation and could work freely in Pakistan.

The LeT operates under the banner of the JuD, which runs hospitals and schools throughout the country.
