A strong and shallow earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 hit northwest Japan on Thursday but there was no tsunami warning, public broadcaster NHK reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage and Tokyo Electric Power Co said its Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear plant in the region was operating normally.
