Three sons of hardline cleric Sufi Mohammad were re-arrested by Pakistani police soon after they were freed on the orders of a court as they are wanted in connection with several cases registered in the militancy-hit Swat valley.

The Peshawar High Court ordered the release of the trio -- Rizwanullah, Hayatullah, and Ziaullah -- on Wednesday in response to a petition filed by them challenging their detention.

They were re-arrested soon after they were released from the central jail in Peshawar yesterday. Policemen from Swat picked them up near the gate of the prison and whisked them away to an undisclosed location, reports said today.

Sufi Mohammed, whose son-in-law Maulana Fazlullah is a top Taliban commander, had brokered a peace deal between militants and authorities in Swat, which collapsed later.

A police official told Dawn newspaper that the three men would be taken to Swat where they are wanted in connection with several cases.

In its order releasing the trio, the High Court had said they could be freed only if they were not wanted in any other cases.

Muhammad, chief of the banned Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariah Mohammadi, and his three sons were arrested from their residence in Peshawar on July 22.

They were later sent to prison under the provisions of the Maintenance of Public Order law, which allows people to be detained without charges being filed against them. Police in Swat have booked Sufi Mohammad under the Anti-Terrorism Act
and other laws for his links with Taliban fighters led by his son-in-law Fazlullah.

He has also been charged with treason.

The radical cleric went into hiding after the controversial Swat peace deal collapsed in April. The deal envisaged the setting up of Islamic courts in the region in exchange for the Taliban laying down their arms.
