Recalling the time when a bullet went clean through his brain during a battle in Afghanistan, a Royal Marine has said that he owes his life to the goggles he wore and added that people now say "I'm a walking miracle."

The round from a Taliban sniper entered near Liam Brentley's ear, came out the other side of his head  and got embedded in a wall.

"How someone can be shot in the head and still be here, I don't understand. They say I'm a walking miracle!" The Sun quoted the Bradford Commando Brentley, as saying.

Talking about the goggles he said: "They deflected the bullet up a bit."

Four months after the injury, he has amazed doctors by learning to walk and talk again.

However, he is now deaf in his left ear and has other medical problems, including short-term memory loss.

The ex-rugby league pro, who quit the sport to join 40 Commando, saluted the skill of Army medics who treated him in Afghanistan.

After being flown to Birmingham, surgeons had to remove part of his brain and skull, which is now left concave and needing a metal plate, the paper said.
