Life imprisonment for acid throwers in PoK

The government of Pakistan-administered Kashmir is all set to introduce a law that will punish culprits involved in acid throwing on women, with life imprisonment and fine amounting to one million rupees. 

The government has initiated efforts to legalise the framework that would punish the culprits who are involved in acid throwing incidents, the Geo News reported Saturday.

According to sources, President Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan has approved life imprisonment and one million rupees fine for the accused involved in acid throwing.

The ordinance will remain effective for three months until the legislation is passed.

The attacks are often done in violent retaliation by a rebuffed suitor or a would-be marriage partner, Washington Post reported.

Over 100 acid attacks are reported every year in Pakistan but many more go unreported, according to the Oscar winning Pakistani documentary film Saving Face.
