US special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke will not be visiting New Delhi during his current trip to the region as announced earlier due to "mismatch" in his programme schedule, the state department has said.

"I think the Ambassador is not going to stop in India on this trip. There was a mismatch in terms of scheduling. So he will do that on a future trip to the region," Assistant secretary of state for Public Affairs P J Crowley said yesterday.

A senior State Department official said that nothing should be read out from the last minute cancellation of Holbrooke's trip to India. Holbrooke is winding up his trip to Pakistan and is now scheduled to visit Afghanistan.

The official said Holbrooke was ready to visit New Delhi. However, it was felt it would be too early for him to visit as secretary of state Hillary Clinton was in New Delhi early this week during which major issues were discussed.
