Egyptian authorities today extended for another 15 days the detention of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, who is in custody along with his two sons on charges of corruption and ordering shooting of anti-regime protesters, while an ex-minister was jailed for five years for fraud.
83-year-old Mubarak, who was ousted in February following a mass uprising against his rule, is currently being treated for a heart condition at a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh.
Egypt's state prosecutor renewed the detention of Mubarak for another 15 days amid a probe into the killing of protesters and corruption, Al Arabiya reported, quoting a statement issued by the prosecutor's office. His current detention ends on May 12.
The move came a day after the prosecutors extended the remand for Mubarak's sons Alaa and Gamal, who are lodged in the capital's Tora prison, by another 15 days.
Mubarak and his sons were detained on April 13. This is the second time that the former President's
detention has been extended since his arrest.
Authorities were planning to transfer Mubarak to a military hospital "as soon as his health condition
stabilises," Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy had earlier said in a letter to the public prosecutor.
Meanwhile, Zuheir Garana, Egypt's ex-Tourism Minister and a key ally of Mubarak, was jailed for five years today after being convicted of involvement in corruption, media reports said.
He is the second top official of the Mubarak era to be convicted of involvement in graft after Interior Minister Habib el-Adly, who was sentenced to a 12-year imprisonment last week.
Nearly 850 people were killed and more than 6,000 injured during the mass protests against Mubarak's regime in Egypt that began on January 25 and forced him to resign in February after over three decades in power.
