Dhaka airport resumes operations after Jet Airways mishap

Flight operations at Dhaka's Zia International Airport resumed this afternoon after the India's Jet Airways aircraft with 139 people on-board that had skidded off the runway was removed.

"Departure and landing of aircrafts resumed after the flight operations were suspended for nearly three hours after the accident," a Civil Aviation Authority spokesman said.

The New Delhi-bound Jet Airways aircraft met with an accident on the ZIA runway just ahead of its take off with 139 passengers and crew onboard.

"The aircraft skidded off the runway while it was taking off, but there was no incident casualties and all the passengers and crew were safe," Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority chairman Air Commodore Sakeb Iqbal Khan Majlish earlier said.

He said the passengers were immediately evacuated from the Boeing 737 aircraft while an air force contingent joined the clearing off the runway with civil aviation workers and Biman Bangladesh airlines and Jet Airways engineers.

Airport officials said the passengers were taken to different hotels after the runway crash while they were forced to divert two GMG planes and Biman Bangladesh airlines to the Chittagong airport and two Dhaka-bound United Airways and GMG crafts were stranded at West Benmgal’s Kolkata and Jessore airports.

A four-member probe committee, led by Wing Commander Quamrul Islam, has been formed to find out the reason behind the incident, an official said.
