Jigme Norbu, a nephew of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, was killed when a car hit him while on a 'walk for Tibet' on Florida highway, police said.

45-year-old Norbu was walking on the highway as part of a march organised to highlight the cause of Tibet when he was struck by a sports utility vehicle at 7.30pm on Monday, a
brief statement by the highway patrol said.

The Tibetan activist had undertaken similar marches for the Tibetan cause over the years, including one in 2009 from Indian to New York to mark the 50th anniversary of the
Tibetan uprising.

The SUV was driven by a 31-year-old Palm Coast resident who was driving along with his two children. The man was not charged for murder.

Norbu, a resident of Bloomington, Indiana, was the son of the late elder brother of Dalai Lama.
