Australia's Labour prime minister Julia Gillard said Saturday's election was too close to call and it could take a number of days to reach a result.

"Obviously this is too close to call, there are many seats where the results are undecided," Gillard told Labour party faithful gathered in Melbourne.

Labour would remain in power until a result was known, Gillard said.
