33 killed in clashes in Pakistan's restive northwest

Thirty-three people, including 22 militants, were killed in clashes in Pakistan's restive tribal belt bordering Afghanistan while three rebels were apprehended by security forces in the northwestern Swat valley, authorities said today.

Nine members of an anti-Taliban militia and six militants were killed in fighting in the Orakzai Agency, officials said.

The clashes broke out when Taliban fighters attacked homes and trenches built by the tribal militia at Storykhel area in Orakzai, 200km from Peshawar.

Local tribal elder Malik Sharif was among those killed by the militants, officials said.

The militants tried to occupy Sharif’s home when the militia retaliated, sparking intense gun battles.

Both sides were using heavy weapons, officials said.

In the Waziristan tribal region, 15 militants and two soldiers were killed in clashes that erupted when the Taliban raided Boya Narai post in Jandola sector last night.

Security forces repulsed the attack, the military said. Taliban commander Zainul was among the 15 militants killed. Three security personnel were injured in the clashes.

Security forces also conducted search and clearance operations at several places in Razmak and Shakai sectors of Waziristan and seized caches of arms and ammunition.  In the Khyber Agency, a militant was killed and another apprehended during a gun battle with security forces in Bara sub-division, officials of the Frontier Corps said.

Three militants surrendered to security forces in the Swat valley, the military said.

Security forces carried out search and clearance operations at several places, including Mingora, the main city in Swat, and seized arms and ammunition.
