Why I would have never voted for Hillary Clinton

At the recently concluded US Presidential elections, Hillary was trumped, and Donald Trump is now the President-elect, but are we well informed about the choices we make?

Donald Trump is now the President of the United States. There is nothing to be changed about it, and whether you dry your eyes out wondering how America could be so crazy, think about this—would Hillary Clinton really make a better president than Donald Trump?

My problem with Hillary Clinton starts with her being a feminist. I’m a feminist, and I don’t support her, because I don’t believe she is one. There are so many times she has been lauded for being on her way to becoming the ‘first woman president of the United States’. She has been praised for being a woman, been acclaimed for her stand against misogyny, and the first thing people seem to associate her with is her gender. How have people so obviously missed the point here?

Presidency is about leadership and progress. It is about solving the country’s most deep-rooted problems, about listening to the majorities and the minorities, and making informed decisions to bring about progress. When has it ever been about whether the president is Black, White, Orange, male or female? History is not made when a woman becomes president—it is made when black (and all other) lives start mattering. It is made when terrorism is stopped. It is made by game-changing inventions, staggering discoveries. When corruption is eliminated, when all people are treated as equals, when poverty is eradicated. If you are a feminist, you should disregard the fact that a candidate is a female, and view both candidates equally. Isn’t that what gender equality really is?

In addition, most people voting for Clinton are doing it to be ‘saved from Trump’, or because she’s a female. Does anybody really know what economic and political reforms she has promised? What has she said about the country’s monetary problems, what has she promised to do about America’s 19.5 billion dollar debt? What has she said about healthcare, technology, unemployment? While some may be well-informed about her mandate, but there are several who made uninformed decisions. There are even several who were influenced by pop culture—just because Beyonce is voting for ‘her’, does not mean you should too. Just because Beyonce has a better voice, it doesn’t mean it matters more than yours.

Don’t get me wrong, I would not have voted for Trump under any circumstances—I just don’t think it’s okay for everyone to think Clinton is the ‘better option’ because she talks in a predictable, commonplace manner. On the Ellen de Genres show, a few weeks ago, Chrissy Teigen even said that “It is important to vote for the person who is not a sociopath”—how is that a reason to vote for the other?

The truth is, it is shameful that the presidency of one of the most powerful country in the world turned into a topic of which candidate would most likely make ‘history’ because of their gender. It is shameful that it has become about who is less racist, and who is involved in fewer scandals. It is shameful that the presidency has become about leaking secret recordings of the candidates, and about which candidate is more politically correct. It is shameful that people cannot see past these shallow blows and ask the candidates the real questions, which is why Ken Bone got so much fame—he didn’t care if Clinton’s email got hacked, he wanted to know how secure his job was tomorrow.

This is why so many people sat out the elections. They realised that the presidential election, something prestigious, formal and terribly important has become a source of entertainment for everyone. The Internet is laughing about the things Trump says, about Hillary’s reactions and speeches about being a ‘woman’, about all the scandals that have come to light since the elections started.

All that being said, Trump has won and we all wish America best of luck from the other side of the world—it was either bad or worse in my opinion, and America’s choice could not have been harder. Let’s hope that this was all a big joke, and race/gender equality, good healthcare, continuous economic progress and peace continue to be a reality in the United States.
