After months of tedious negotiations, United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Boris Johson announced Thursday that the UK and European Union (EU) have agreed to a Brexit deal.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted, "We’ve got a great new deal that takes back control — now Parliament should get Brexit done on Saturday so we can move on to other priorities like the cost of living, the NHS, violent crime and our environment."
According to the BBC, Johnson made the revelation ahead of the meeting between European leaders in Brussels.
"We have arrived at an agreement with the British government on an ordered withdrawal of the United Kingdom and the European Union and also on the framework for our future relationship," BBC quoted the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier as saying.
Expressing his apprehension about the new deal, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said that the new Brexit deal was worse than the previous deal negotiated by former British PM Theresa May.
The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), a party from Northern Ireland, said they could not back the new Brexit deal as it stands.
EU diplomats had on Monday indicated the bloc wanted more concessions from Johnson and said a full agreement was unlikely this week.
Johnson had commented that he wants to strike an exit deal at an EU summit on Thursday and Friday to allow an orderly departure on October 31. But if an agreement is not possible he will lead the United Kingdom out of the club it joined in 1973 without a deal - even though Parliament has passed a law saying he cannot do so.
The new Brexit deal still needs the approval of both UK and European parliaments to sail through.
