Watch: Barack Obama at first public event post-White House in Chicago

Former US President Barack Obama on Monday participates in his first post-White House public even at the University of Chicago.

The event was about having a conversation on community organising and civil engagement, CBS News reported.

Obama meets youth leaders and promotes community organising near the same South Side neighbourhoods where his own activism blossomed and propelled him to two terms in the White House that ended with Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20.

At the event, Obama says the most important thing he can do in his post-presidency is help "prepare the next generation of leadership."

Obama's continued connection to Chicago is important to the city, which has global aspirations as well as a palpable insecurity about its place in the world. During the last year of Obama's second term, Chicago laid claim to its share of his legacy by beating out Hawaii and New York as the site of his presidential library.
