The United States and Cuba have announced the opening of embassies in a major move to re-establish diplomatic relations, said a senior US officer.

According to BBC, relations between the two countries were severed since the early 1960s when the US broke links and imposed a trade embargo with the Communist island. Both the countries agreed to normalise relations last year.

Since 1977, the US and Cuba have operated diplomatic missions called "interests sections" in each other's capitals under the legal protection of Switzerland.
