Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan grabbed headlines on Saturday for 'stopping' a man from committing suicide, reports international media.

The man had climbed over a railing on the Bosphorus bridge in Istanbul, and walked along the railing on the outside, threatening to kill himself by jumping into the sea below.

Fortunately, Erdogan's motorcade was passing the bridge at the same moment, and some of his staff alighted noticing the scene.

The staff then pleaded with the man to abandon his plans and return to safe ground. He finally agreed after the staff told him the president wanted to speak to him.

Dogan news agency reported that the man was suffering from depression, and police had been trying to stop him from jumping into the water.

The man was eventually helped out of his predicament and escorted to the president's car. Erdogan, who was speaking on his phone, then proceeded to have a chat with the man while sitting in the back of the car.

According to the Associated Press, the Turkey president's office has decided to help the man fight his depression.
