Superman has always been one of the most bankable superheroes of all time, but now, it's become official. His debut appearance in Action Comics #01, which was first published in June, 1938, was sold for a record $3.2 million. The comic book was sold on eBay, on August 25 at an auction, making it the most expensive comic book sold to date. The exact selling price was $3,207,852.

The comic book which features the landmark appearance of Superman received a 9 out of 10 quality rating from the Certified Guaranty Company, and is reported to be just one of 50 unrestored copies still in existence, maintaining almost mint condition quality. In 1938, the issue was first sold for 10 cents.

Although, Action Comics #01 has now taken over the title of most expensive comic, the previous record holder was actually another copy of this same issue, and was sold at an impressive $2.16 million back in 2011. That copy had a 9 CGC rating as well.

Action Comics #01 is not only the first introduction of the America's most famous superhero, but is also widely credited for ushering in the beginning of the superhero industry.

The Washington Post reports that it was Darren Adams, a local comic book shop owner who is the seller of the book. Adams stated to Washington Post, "I actually held it for a few years – I was so excited about this book," he said. "Most books have a history … but this book was totally off the grid, and nobody knew about it till I made it known."

The news agency goes on to report that the original owner kept the book in a cedar chest at high altitude in the mountains of West Virginia after purchasing it from a newsstand in 1938, which is why it was so well preserved. It remained there until he died, and was later sold to Adams.

As part of a deal between Adams and eBay, 1% of the sale will be donated to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for spinal-cord injury and paralysis research.
