The word "selfie" has been declared as the 'word of the year' for 2013 by the Oxford University Press.

According to research conducted by Oxford Dictionaries editors, the use of “selfie” has increased an incredible 17,000 percent since the same time last year, the Verge reports.

A selfie is a type of self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone.

However, "selfie" has not been included in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) itself.

According to the report, it is part of the online Oxford Dictionaries website and is being considered for future inclusion in the OED as well.
