Nina Davuluri became the first American of Indian origin to be crowned as Miss America. A definite moment, if there was any, showcasing the cultural diversity of a nation built by immigrants.
That, of course, didn't stop the trolls who poured out in large number from all corners of the Internet, especially on Twitter. Together they spewed a barrage of not just racist and geographically inappropriate comments, but also some extremely ignorant posts that accused her of being a “terrorist”.
And there were those who though she was an Arab:
I am literarily soo mad right now a ARAB👳 won #MissAmerica

Many of them were rooting for Miss Kansas, and the meme below also did rounds on social media:
We all know she's the real #MissAmerica #MissKansas pic.twitter.com/USLzeUjn0k

But all of this didn't seem ruffle Miss America's feathers one bit, who took extreme pride in her title and even went on to say, “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
