Pakistan's law minister Zahid Hamid on Sunday voluntarily stepped down from his position after anti-blasphemy protests

The decision comes in the wake of the protests that continue across the country, following Saturday's crackdown by the police and paramilitary personnel on Islamabad sit-in staged by a religious group.

According to Geo TV, Hamid has tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, which will be accepted later in the day.

"I was not directly responsible for the introduction of the controversial amendment to the Finality of Prophethood declaration for electoral candidates. In order to restore peace in the country, I have decided to step down from my position, " reported Geo Tv quoting Hamid.

According to reports, Hamid is concerned about his safety after his ancestral home in Pasrur was attacked by protesters on Saturday.

On Sunday, Zahid Hamid had apologised to protesters for provoking outrage.

Pakistan Rangers have taken control of the sit-in area after reportedly a clash erupted between protesters and paramilitary forces at Faizabad Interchange in Islamabad early on Sunday.

Rangers have cordoned off the IJP Road, Expressway, Murree Road and the Faisal Avenue.
