A 40-year-old Ukrainian crew member of a ship who suffered a stroke at sea, was saved by authorities at the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) here.

Authorities swiftly responded to a distress message from the master of the ship 'MT Flagship Orchid' at 8 PM on May 6, via e-mail which read, "Medical emergency, Assistance required," and arranged a tug for medical evacuation.

Sergiy Nalyvayko suffered a stroke and the left part of his body was paralysed, an NMPT release here said today.

The patient was successfully evacuated at 12.35 AM yesterday and admitted to AJ Hospital here through their steamer agent Atlantic Shipping Limited, it said.

The master had also informed the authorities that the ship would reach Mangaluru Port limit after midnight, it added.

The merchant transport vessel, coming from Singapore, was proceeding to Sikka via Mangalore.

The patient is under observation and his condition is presently stable, hospital sources said.
