A man driving a rented pickup truck mowed down pedestrians and cyclists on a bike path alongside the Hudson River in New York City, killing eight people and injuring about a dozen others in what authorities said was an act of terrorism.
The 29-year-old suspect was shot by police in the abdomen and arrested after he crashed the truck into a school bus and fled his vehicle, authorities said.
Belgians and Argentinians also are among the 11 wounded in Tuesday’s attack.
"Argentine victims were in a group of friends who travelled to New York from Rosario," reports said quoting Argentina’s Foreign Ministry.
The Ministry said that they were celebrating the 30th anniversary of graduating from Polytechnic College of Rosario.
In a series of tweets, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie says he’s “shocked by the events in New York.”
"We are shocked by the events in New York. We work with local authorities to identify to our compatriots. Our priority at the moment is to help the relatives and friends of the victims. I accompany heart at this moment of deep and inexplicable pain to family and friends of our compatriots who died in New York," he said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the terror attack in the New York City and extended his prayers and thoughts to the family of the victims.
"Strongly condemn the terror attack in New York City. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased & prayers with those injured," the Prime Minister tweeted.
The incident marked the greatest loss of life from a suspected terrorist attack in New York since suicide hijackers crashed jetliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001, killing more than 2,600 people.
