Lakhvi was detained by the Islamabad administration on January 18 under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) after he was granted post-arrest bail by an Anti-terrorism Court (ATC). An official close to the development said that the objective behind keeping Lakhvi behind bars is to prevent him from attending meetings or potentially regrouping.

According to sources in the administration, Lakhvi is being kept in detention due to pressure exerted by the Indian government.
