Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto will meet US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for a private meeting on Wednesday, Pena Nieto's office said via Twitter on Tuesday.

The Mexican presidency said the government had sent an invitation to both Trump and Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton for talks and that Trump's team had accepted.

A spokesman for the Mexican presidency said the meeting would be in Mexico and that details of the encounter were still being worked out.

Trump took to Twitter to announce he had accepted Nieto's invitation:

Trump has previously stated Mexico is "killing" the United States (US) with cheap labour and has sent "criminals" and "rapists" across the border. He is also promising to build a huge border wall and proposed a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country.

Although Trump has been the most outspoken candidate, his main rivals also say the government must stop the flow of illegal migrants into the country, mainly from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
