The Lufthansa Group has said it was "unfortunate" that the company's ad appeared on Breitbart, a conservative, alt-right news outlet in the US.

Referring to Breitbart as a website that promotes "violent, sexist, extremist or politically radical content", Lufthansa said the platform was inconsistent with their company's values.

It said that the website selection for the ads is an automatic process but the company would continue to improve their filters. Lufthansa added that Breitbart has been blocked by their agency.

Read the company's full statement here which appeared on its website:

It is our fundamental principle to rule out advertising on any website that promotes violent, sexist, extremist or politically radical content. According to our investigations, this particular case involves banner ads that are placed automatically through specialized agencies. Our ad on the website in question is in no way acceptable to us and is not consistent with our values as a company. The website selection is an automated process, which means that neither we nor our media agency chose Breitbart for banner ads. Unfortunately, sometimes pages like these cannot be filtered out. We will continue to improve our filters and specialized software in order to avoid this type of misplacement. The Breitbart website has already been blocked by the agency.

On Friday, Stephen K Bannon, a former executive at Breitbart and now White House advisor, told the mainstream US media to "keep its mouth shut", calling them the Trump's administration's "opposition", ratcheting up its simmering feud with journalists.
