In a show of support and solidarity, the B'nai Israel synagogue gave Muslims the keys to their building so that they could have a place to worship after their mosque was burned down on January 28 in Victoria, Texas (US).
“Jewish community members walked into my home and gave me a key to the synagogue,” Shahid Hashmi, one of the founders of the mosque told the The New York Times.
“Everyone knows everybody, I know several members of the mosque, and we felt for them,” Robert Loeb, the president of B'nai Israel, was quoted as saying by foward.com. He added, “We have probably 25 to 30 Jewish people in Victoria, and they probably have 100 Muslims. We got a lot of building for a small amount of Jews.”
The cause of the fire is not yet known. A Facebook post by the Islamic Centre of Victoria stated that an investigation is ongoing."The outpouring support from our wonderful Victoria community and all over the nation have been phenomenal! UNITED WE STAND!," the post read.
Donations locally and through a GoFundMe page have raised over $1 million to rebuild the mosque. "The outpouring of love, kind words, hugs, helping hands and the financial contributions are examples of the true American Spirit and Humanity at its best with donations coming in from all over the world," reads a message on the mosque's Facebook page.
In a show of even more kindness toward members of the mosque in the community, St Joseph High School students in Victoria on Wednesday walked from their school to the mosque to offer prayers and plant a tree as a gift.
