Imagine yourself stuck in Antarctica. The cold desert can be unforgiving. But what if you you find dessert in desert?
Not just any sweet but a very special century old delicacy?
No, we are not talking about Narnia. Conservationists recently discovered a 106-year-old fruitcake and its perfectly fresh and edible!
Yes, you read it right! According to Antarctic Heritage Trust, the cake is believed to date to Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition between 1910 and 1913.
An official working the Trust said though the tin box in which the cake was found was rusty, but the cake itself was 'fresh and edible'.
The extreme cold climate may have helped in preservation of the fruitcake. It was discovered in an old hut at Cape Adare, which is an major site used by Antarctic explorers.
Since May last year, the New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust has been preserving artefacts found at Cape Adare.
Tragically, the cake may have survived, but Scott's entire party died on the return journey from the pole.
