A hate crime in Kansas city in the United States left a family and community reeling over the death of an Indian engineer who was shot and killed in a bar on Wednesday night.

Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, who was working at the Garmin headquarters in Olathe, was killed in the shooting, while another Indian, his colleague Alok Madasani, was critically injured. Madasani was released from the hospital on Thursday.

On a Go Fund Me page set up for Kuchibhotla's wife Sunayana and family to cover funeral and other expenses, Maggie Grillot, sister of Ian, the third victim in the shooting incident expressed her condolences to the family and said: "My brother wishes he could have done more for your family." Media reports reveal that 24-year-old Ian Grillot, who survived, was shot while attempting to stop the shooter identified as 51-year-old Olathe man Adam Purinton.

The incident left many Americans horrified that such a crime took place. Some of them expressed their reactions on the Go Fund Page. Christina Reeves wrote: "I am saddened to know that something like this has happened. People have to know that the hate that was spewed is not ok to say, think or act on."

Charlotte Afonso called it "shameful" when the colour of one's skin causes violence.

Former engineer Karen Manherz Powell, who has worked with many Indian engineers she described as "friendly and hard working", said she could not "help but feel so badly for this man and his family".

"This just makes me sick. One goes out with friends for an enjoyable evening & gets this. I have no words -- except my heart aches," said Sue Duroche.

"I don't even know what America is anymore," questioned Jessica Conifer and said she was "just sorry".

The Go Fund Me page also revealed the victim was the "kindest person you would meet, full of love, care and compassion for everyone."

A Sikh civil rights group has asked the community to be extra vigilant in the wake of the crime. Meanwhile, the the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is assisting local police authorities in the investigation.
