With viral videos doing weight training, push-ups and rigorous gym exercises, this woman is redefining the term ‘traditional workout’.

Most of us who indulge in weight training and rigorous gym exercises wear western gym wear attire. It is hard to even comprehend going to a gym in anything other than shorts, tights, vests and tees. Indian ethnic dresses don’t even come to our minds. But one woman from Pune is changing this conception with her viral videos, performing hardcore exercises in saree.

Dr Sharvari Inamdar has emerged as a viral sensation recently thanks to her video doing weight training wearing a saree at a gym. While Dr Inamdar has been one a rigorous fitness regimen for the last five years like any other fitness freak, she holds her own place, having mastered the art of doing ush-ups, pull-ups and weight training in a saree with effortless ease.

Dr Inamdar believes that wearing a saree “should not be a barrier for any household woman to look after her body.” She says that by wearing it during her fitness activity, she is “celebrating womanhood.”

The internet sensation advises all women to include weight training in their fitness activities. Talking to a leading media house, she says, “Weight training helps in improving your bone density and muscle mass. When you train with weights, you eat properly and take care of your body. You become strong, emotionally, physically and mentally, and you can take care of your family and society better.”

Dr Inamdar ponders that while many women go for yoga or dance fitness nowadays, adding weight training to the fitness schedule will benefit in staying young and enjoying life with strength. She also shed light on a few misconceptions around weight training for women.

“Muscles are very good because they keep you active. Misconception happens after women see bodybuilding women on stage. That is their sport. They want to look their best on stage. You will not look like a bodybuilder if you train with weights. It will just make you strong,” she continues, “It makes your body look toned and young. Push-ups and pull-ups are predominantly male exercises but when you start on a minimal level, you can grow from there under proper guidance. Don’t think anything as a barrier for getting better.”

Dr Inamdar encourages people to take up weight training regardless of gender, emphasizing that it is “an exercise for both women and men.”
