The new season will focus on the war on drugs in Mexico with Guadalajara cartel at the centre of it.
Netflix released a teaser for the fourth season of their docu-drama Narcos on Monday. It had a new theme but the most exciting part was casting announcement of Ant-Man star Michael Pena and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story alum Diego Luna as the two male leads.
The third season of Narcos saw Cali cartel come to an end and the action was moved closer to the US borders with the inclusion of Mexican drug cartels. This is mid-1990s era. The fourth season will see DEA wage a war against Mexico's Guadalajara cartel.
Details about the roles of Michael Pena and Diego Luna are still under wraps. But this definitely signals that showrunners will phase out Pedro Pascal's character - Javier Pena. The last episode of the third season has Pena contemplating whether getting beyond the fence is worth his time. That leaves the fate of his character open-ended.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Eric Newman revealed that the show will break the chornological pattern in order to go back in time and cover the origin and formative years of Guadalajara cartel are in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Notorious Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman got his start at Guadalajara cartel. In September, Netflix crew member Carlos Munoz Portal was found dead in his car in Mexico City's high-crime area. Authorities are still investigating the case and showrunners and the local law enforcement maintain that his death is not connected with the show.
Talking about casting Michael Pena and Diego Luna, Newman said, "First and foremost, they are both amazing actors. Michael is Mexican-American and Diego is Mexican, and that was very important for authenticity. They both responded to this particular story and they love the show. It’s not as short of a list as you think, but for us, the two of them were at the very top of it. We were thrilled to have them join us."
The next season of Narcos will premier some time in 2018.
