Google for India: Internet giant unveils tailor-made apps for millions of citizens

The company unveils Android Go, Google Go, Google Assistant for JioPhone and more!

Google hosted its ‘Google for India’ event at New Delhi today. The internet giant made many announcements and shared insights on the company’s commitment to the country’s next billion users and also its role as a growth engine for the country.

According to Google, India crossed the 400 million internet user mark this year. Indians are said to be using more data than ever before - 4GB on average every month, projected to grow to 11GB per month in the next four years. As the number of internet users grows per day, Google aims to build new products and features specifically for India.

During the ‘Google for India’ event, the company spoke about Android Oreo (Go edition), designed for entry-level smartphones. ‘Android Go’ is basically, designed to run better with devices sporting either 512MB or 1GB of RAM. Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphones also come with a version of the Google Play Store that allows people to download any app, while highlighting the apps designed to work best on Go edition devices.  There will also be a number of optimized Go apps - Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, Gboard, Chrome and Files Go, a new file management app.

We also have a new app from Google Search, called Google Go. At the moment, a preview is available on the Google Play Store in India and Indonesia. The main aim of the app is to help those people, who go online for the first time.

The company also released a special version of the Google Assistant, for the JioPhone. This version is said to offer voice-based user interface along with a rich set of data services for first time internet users on the JioPhone. The Assistant can help make phone calls, text, play music and videos, navigate and search the internet, and access other apps and services too.

‘Google for India’ is an annual event which is being held for the third consecutive year. In 2015, Google CEO Sundar Pichai hosted the event and announced free Wi-Fi at 100 railway stations, faster internet search, YouTube pause to buffer, among other relevant things.
