AJ Styles will now face WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series pay-per-view.
Jinder Mahal lost his WWE Championship to AJ Styles in SmackDown LIVE match on Tuesday. This means that Styles will now face Brock Lesnar at the Survivor Series.
Modern-day Maharaja and The Phenomenal One clashed in one of the best shows on display. Styles became the WWE Champion for the second time to end Mahal’s surprising long reign at the top.
The Indian was the aggressor from the start. He threw Styles into the announcer’s table and tried to wear Styles down by his approach. He used his bigger size to advantage.
Styles fought back and almost had the championship when he tried the springboard 450 splash on Mahal. But the Singh brothers saved Mahal.
Styles then attacked the Singh brothers and put them out of the equation. Mahal performed a Khallas but Styles put his leg on the rope to avoid the three-count.
Mahal then attempted a Khallas from the top rope. But, Styles survived and recovered to complete a neck-first fron the top rope. This was enough for Styles take the title.
After the fight, Mahal took out his frustration on the Singh brothers.
Styles' win meant that a title belt has changed hands for the first time outside North America.
The result, however comes as surprise as WWE are scheduled to visit India next month and the whole promotion of the tour has been built around Mahal and his WWE championship.
While Styles vs Lesner should be a great match- it was Mahal who had initially challenged the Univesal champions for a match. Taking away Mahal's title and his oppurtunity to clash with Lesnar makes very little sense right now.
Mahal will be leading WWE's India tour this December. But without his status as the champion, he is little more than an undercard.
That also raises the question- is WWE planning another title switch before the India tour?
