Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narendra Batra on Thursday dismissed the possibility of India boycotting the 2022 Commonwealth Games if shooting is not included in the competition.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Raninder Singh had urged the government and the IOA to boycott the CWG 2022 if the organisers refuse to reconsider their decision to drop shooting from the 22nd edition of the Games.

Batra said, "His (Raninder) anguish is justified, but to ask for a boycott of the Games because an optional discipline is not included is far-fetched," said Batra.

Batra, however, said that IOA and sports ministry will take up the issue with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the organisers.

On the other hand, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach, who is currently touring India, refused to take a stand on the issue but assured that dropping shooting from Olympics is out of question.

"IOC is completely different than CGF and Olympics are different than Commonwealth Games. We (IOC) are totally independent body and do not interfere in other organisation's functioning," said Bach.

He also made it clear that this issue was not discussed with him by either the IOA officials or the sports minister.

Batra also spoke about the incident involving two athletes who were asked to leave the Gold Coast CWG village after needles were found in their rooms.

"We have taken this issue very seriously. IOA will write to the Sports ministry and SAI to make 'no needle' policy mandatory in all the national training camps," said IOA president.

"The athletes will have to be made aware of 'no needle' policy at the very first stage. Our commitment against doping is clear and there can be no compromise on it," added Batra.

He added that IOA has taken a pledge to increase women's participation in the NSFs. "We will have gender balance in our sports federations, that is our promise to IOC chief Thomas Bach," he told IOC chief.

Batra, meanwhile, announced that IOA will bid for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, 2030 Asian Games and 2032 Olympics Games.

"We will seriously bid for these events with the full support of the Government. Whether we will get them or not is something only time will tell," said Batra.

Earlier, Bach had a meeting with the sports minister and IOA officials in which "good governance, transparency and autonomy of sports federations" were discussed.

It was decided to set up a committee comprising of representative from the IOC, Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), IOA and sports ministry to look into these issues and come up with proposals to deal with them.

IOA president Narindra Batra, meanwhile, announced that IOA will bid for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, 2030 Asian Games and 2032 Olympics Games. “We will seriously bid for these events with the full support of the Government. Whether we will get them or not is something only time will tell,” said Batra.
