French Open Super Series: PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Saina Nehwal advance to second round

HS Prannoy and Sai Praneeth also progressed to the next round.

India's top shuttlers made a good start at USD 3,25,000 French Open Super Series. Kidambi Srikanth, Saina Nehwal and PV Sidhu, all won their opening games to advance to the second round. 

Srikanth who had clinched his third title of the season at Denmark Open Super Series premier last week, emerged victories after his opponent Germany’s Fabian Roth retired at 0-3 in the opening game. The World No 8 Indian will face Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki Vincent, whom he had beaten in straight games last week en route to his title.

Sindhu, who also has been in good form this season with two titles and a silver at the World Championship, saw off Spain’s Beatriz Corrales 21-19 21-18 to set up a clash with Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi.

Saina Nehwal triumphed over Denmark's Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt 21-14 11-21 21-10 and will now clash with World No. 5, Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.

Men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty too made a positive start as he disposed off France’s Bastian Kersaudy and Julien Maio 21-12 21-14 in 30 minutes. They will face Denmark’s sixth seed Mads Conrad-Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding next. 

HS Prannoy also clinched a comfortable 21-15, 21-17 win over Korea's Lee Hyun Il in a one-sided men's singles match that lasted 43 minutes. The 25-year-old will now cross swords with Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus of Denmark for a place in the quarter-finals.

B Sai Praneeth also made it to second round after struggling past Khosit Phetpradab of Thailand 21-13, 21-23, 21-19 in the opening round.

However, Parupalli Kashyap's campaign ended after receiving a 23-21 18-21 17-21 defeat from Indonesia's Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

In women's doubles, the duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy also advanced into the next round scoring an easy 21-12 21-12 win against England's Jenny Moore and Victoria Williams. 

Men's doubles pair of Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy's crashed out of the tournament after losing 11-21 13-21 to the Russian pair of Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov. The mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N. Sikki Reddy also suffered a first-round exit after 15-21 12-21 loss to Indonesians Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir.
