Osama bin Laden wanted to attack and kill the members of England football squad during 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

Bin Laden had plotted a plan to bomb and slaughter the England player including David Beckham, Alan Shearer, David Seaman, Michael Owen and manager Glenn Hoddle during  their opening game against Tunisia, according to a book.

Adam Robinson's book Terror on the Pitch, based on notes made by terrorist Ahmed Zaoui, gives chilling details of the plot.

According to a report in The Sun, the book reveals that the plan was to send fanatics onto the pitch to slaughter Beckham, Shearer, Seaman, Owen and Hoddle.

England goalkeeper David Seaman was to be first victim. A suicide bomber was allegedly directed to blow him up at Stade Velodrome in Marseille. Then fellow jihadis posing as medical workers would have rushed onto the pitch and begun slaughtering the other players.

They were told to throw grenades at the bench where David Beckham and Michael Owen were sitting alongside manager Glenn Hoddle.

According to the book, Zaoui wrote: "The Sheikh [Bin Laden], may God bless him, asks that we observe the movements of David Seaman, Alan Shearer and Hoddle."

"His attention has been drawn to two younger players who are becoming well known, David Beckham and Michael Owen."

"We suggest that the point man for the mission should make his way to Seaman and blow himself up. This will be the signal for the other Brothers to start the rest of the operation."

The initial attack on Seaman was supposed to cause a distraction allowing a second conspirator to bomb the England bench. A third terrorist was then supposed to shoot Shearer.

Current England manager Gareth Southgate was a part of the team who took on Tunisia. England won the match 2-0 with Shearer and Paul Scholes scoring.

Southgate's team also played their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2018 against Tunisia. Captain Harry Kane scored a superb brace on his World Cup debut to seal all three points for his side in style.
